they say i need to move on
they say that's what she'd want
they say i need to live the next chapter
they say (but don't say) i need to stop crying
they say (but don't say) i need to get out of the house
they say they have lost someone too
they say they know how i feel
but they do not
they may have lost someone too, but
they did not watch a slow descent into death
they did not watch for two years
they did not see the depth of the human spirit
they did not see the despair in our eyes
they could not comprehend the depth of knowing
they could not help but make ignorant statements, because
they do not know what we know
that ALS is not just a disease
it is a destroyer of hope
it is a naysayer of health
it is the worst nightmare possible
because it was not foisted upon me, no
because it was foisted upon the woman i loved more than life
because i am tired of suffering fools
who have no idea what we go through
because of this monster we call ALS
because of this nightmare that
none of us deserve.
