Remembering Scott Craig: A Life Full of Laughter, Kindness, and Courage

Last night, December 4, 2024, the world lost an extraordinary man: Scott Craig. After a brave battle with ALS, Scott passed away peacefully surrounded by family and loved ones.

Scott was a man who lived life with boundless humor, mischievous energy, and an unwavering spirit of generosity. He was known for his ability to make others laugh, often finding humor in the smallest moments, and his kindness was felt by all who knew him. Whether through his words, his actions, his art, or simply his presence, Scott had a way of making the world a better place.

When Scott's journey with ALS, he faced the diagnosis with a mixture of humor and grace. In his own words, he shared how he had come to terms with the disease, even when it felt surreal and overwhelming. In a post on Scribes4ALS blog, Scott described his initial experience of waiting for the diagnosis and the emotional rollercoaster that came with it. "Waiting for a diagnosis," he wrote, "is like being stuck in a limbo, where time stands still and your mind races." Despite the uncertainty and fear, Scott’s wit never left him. He often lightened the heavy moments with jokes, and that mischievous sense of humor stayed with him throughout his illness.

Scott’s reflections on ALS were raw and honest, yet he never let the disease define him. He penned a powerful piece on the Scribes4ALS blog titled "Save Yourself," where he urged others not to lose hope in the face of the disease. His words were both a testament to his resilience and a reminder to all of us that, even in the darkest of times, there is room for laughter, kindness, and connection. Scott wrote, "This disease may take my body, but it will never take my spirit." That spirit was evident in everything he did.

Though ALS brought physical challenges, it never stopped Scott from being the supportive and loving friend, partner, and father that he was. His generosity knew no bounds. He was always the first to offer help when someone needed it, whether it was an ear to listen, a shoulder to lean on, or a helping hand. Even as ALS progressed, Scott continued to offer his wisdom and compassion to others facing the same battle, sharing his experiences in ways that brought hope and comfort to many.

Scott’s legacy is one of laughter, love, and unyielding kindness. He was a trouble-maker in the best sense of the word—never one to shy away from making mischief, but always with a heart full of good intentions. His humor and wit will be missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

As we say goodbye to Scott, we remember the incredible person he was: a man who faced an insurmountable challenge with courage, humor, and grace. He was a friend, a mentor, a father, and a fighter. His journey was one of resilience, and though he may no longer be with us, his influence will continue to inspire those who knew him.

Scott will be missed, but his spirit, his laughter, and his kindness will never be forgotten. He fought with everything he had, and he left the world a little brighter for having been in it.
